Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: West Bank at opening

Cross the Nile early for the Valley of the Kings, entering three royal tombs on the standard ticket before the heat builds. Continue to the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, then Medinet Habu, the mortuary temple of Ramesses III where the deeply cut reliefs still hold their original paint. Photo stop at the Colossi of Memnon. Afternoon free; a sunrise balloon flight can be added for the following morning. Overnight in Luxor.

Day 2: East Bank and the museums

Karnak in the morning: the great hypostyle hall of 134 columns, the sacred lake and the obelisk of Hatshepsut, one of the tallest standing ancient obelisks anywhere. After lunch, the Luxor Museum, a small and deliberately well-lit collection including the statues found buried in the Luxor Temple courtyard. Finish at Luxor Temple in the late afternoon and along the restored Avenue of Sphinxes as the lighting comes on. Transfer to your hotel, the airport or the train station.
