Egypt can be visited all year, but the season changes how comfortable the trip feels. Sightseeing at Giza, Luxor and Aswan means a lot of time outdoors, so temperature matters more than almost anything else when you choose your dates.

The short answer
The most comfortable time to go to Egypt is generally from October to April, when days are mild to warm rather than very hot. November to March is the coolest stretch, and it is also the busiest, so book flights, hotels and Nile cruises early. If you want fewer crowds without the fiercest heat, look at October, late March or April. To secure your preferred cabin before high season begins, consider booking Luxor to Aswan Nile cruises early.
November to February: coolest weather, highest demand
Winter is the classic time to visit. Days are pleasant for walking through temples and tombs, and Upper Egypt is at its most comfortable. Nights and early mornings can feel properly cool, especially in Cairo and on the river, so pack a warm layer. Christmas, New Year and school holiday weeks are typically the most crowded and the most expensive dates.
March, April, October: the in-between months
These months usually strike a good balance between comfortable sightseeing and availability. Days can already be hot in Luxor and Aswan, so start early and keep the middle of the day for shade, lunch or the cruise deck. Easter can bring a short spike in demand.
May to September: hot, quiet and often better value
Summer is the low season for Upper Egypt. Daytime highs in Luxor and Aswan can pass 40°C from June to August, so sightseeing is best at sunrise, with a rest indoors at midday and plenty of water. It is not the right choice for travelers who struggle with heat. Cairo and Giza are generally milder than the south, and Red Sea beach resorts stay popular through the summer.
Choosing by what you want to do
- Nile cruise and temples: November to March for comfort; see our Nile cruise season guide.
- Pyramids and Cairo: October to April is easiest, and an early start beats both crowds and heat at any time of year.
- Abu Simbel: the Sun Festival takes place in February and October, which adds a special event to an Aswan or Lake Nasser trip.
- Beach add-on: the Red Sea works year-round; combine it with a winter or in-between-season temple route.
- Hot air balloon in Luxor: flights depend on the weather, so keep a spare morning in your plan.
Ramadan and holidays
Ramadan moves earlier each year. Major sites generally stay open, but opening hours, restaurants and the rhythm of the day change, so check the dates for your travel year and confirm site hours before you book. Local public holidays can also make popular sites busier.
