Overview
Floating above Luxor’s West Bank offers a unique perspective on the sharp geographic contrast between the fertile Nile basin and the arid Libyan Desert. Operating under strict Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) safety regulations, daily morning flights launch at dawn when thermal winds remain stable. Passengers board air-conditioned vehicles from their hotel or Nile Cruise, cross the river via motorboat, and receive a comprehensive flight briefing before liftoff. During the 45- to 60-minute flight, licensed pilots navigate shifting air currents to reveal unobstructed views of Hatshepsut’s Temple, the Colossi of Memnon, and surrounding archaeological sites. Detailed Itinerary
Stop 1: Pre-dawn pickup in Luxor (04:00)
An air-conditioned minivan collects you from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise reception. The start is early because balloons can only fly in the still air before sunrise; by mid-morning the thermals make it unsafe.
Stop 2: Motorboat crossing to the West Bank (04:30)
A short crossing of the Nile by motorboat to the launch fields. The river is glassy at this hour and the crossing itself is part of the experience.
Stop 3: Refreshments and safety check-in (04:45)
Tea and coffee are served at the launch site while the crew completes the passenger manifest and weight distribution. Your pilot briefs the group on the landing position, which is the only thing you need to remember.
Stop 4: Inflation at the launch field (05:00)
Watch the envelope being cold-inflated with fans and then heated upright by the burners, next to the Colossi of Memnon. This is the best photography of the morning after the flight itself.
Stop 5: Sunrise flight over the Theban necropolis (05:30)
Forty-five minutes to an hour aloft depending on wind, drifting over the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, the Ramesseum and Medinet Habu, with the green strip of sugar cane and the Nile on one side and open desert on the other.
Stop 6: Landing and flight certificate (06:30)
The ground crew meets the basket wherever it comes down, which is never the same place twice. Certificates are handed out at the landing site.
Stop 7: Return to your hotel or cruise (07:15)
Back across the river in time for breakfast. Balloon flights depend entirely on wind and visibility and are rescheduled or refunded if conditions are unsafe, which is decided by the aviation authority, not by us.
