Situated along the Nile corridor between Luxor and Aswan, Edfu and Kom Ombo represent the architectural pinnacle of Egypt’s Ptolemaic Dynasty. Operating with private air-conditioned transport and dedicated Egyptologist guides, this full-day road excursion links these two crucial archaeological sites into a streamlined route. Guests begin with the Temple of Horus at Edfu, recognized as the most complete pharaonic temple standing in Egypt today due to its intact pylon towers, roofed hypostyle halls, and detailed mythic reliefs depicting the defeat of Seth. Moving south to Kom Ombo, the tour explores a rare symmetrical temple dedicated simultaneously to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris, ending with a visit to the adjacent Crocodile Museum to examine ancient mummified reptiles and medical relief carvings. Detailed Itinerary
Stop 1: Pickup in Luxor (07:00)
Collection from your hotel or Nile cruise for the drive south along the river road. The route follows the cultivated strip the whole way, so the landscape is part of the day.
Stop 2: Arrival at Edfu (09:30)
Around two and a half hours south of Luxor. The final approach to the temple is traditionally made by horse-drawn carriage through the town.
Stop 3: The Temple of Horus at Edfu (10:00)
The most completely preserved cult temple in Egypt, buried under sand and village housing until the 1860s, which is exactly why its roof, ceilings and colossal pylons survived. The falcon statues at the entrance and the reliefs of the battle between Horus and Seth are the highlights.
Stop 4: Drive to Kom Ombo (12:00)
An hour further south along the Nile, with the river visible for much of the way.
Stop 5: The double temple of Kom Ombo (13:00)
A symmetrical temple split down the middle: the southern half for Sobek the crocodile god, the northern for Haroeris the falcon. Look for the relief showing surgical instruments, one of the earliest medical illustrations known.
Stop 6: The Crocodile Museum (14:00)
Mummified crocodiles recovered from the surrounding area, displayed beside the temple.
Stop 7: Lunch (14:30)
A break at a local restaurant before starting the drive back.
Stop 8: Return to Luxor (17:30)
Back to your hotel or cruise. This trip can also be arranged one way, ending in Aswan, if it fits your onward plans.
