Detailed Itinerary
Stop 1: Hotel or cruise pickup (07:00)
Your licensed Egyptologist meets you at your Luxor hotel or moored Nile cruise. The early start is deliberate: the West Bank tombs are cool and quiet for the first two hours and unbearable by noon.
Stop 2: Valley of the Kings (07:45)
Descend into three royal tombs included on the standard ticket, chosen by your guide on the day for their decoration and how busy they are. The tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramesses V and VI need separate tickets bought at the gate.
Stop 3: Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari (09:45)
Three terraces cut into the cliff face for Egypt's most successful female pharaoh, with the colonnade reliefs recording her trading expedition to the land of Punt.
Stop 4: Colossi of Memnon (11:00)
The two seated quartzite statues of Amenhotep III, all that remains above ground of what was once the largest mortuary temple in Thebes.
Stop 5: Lunch on the West Bank (12:00)
An hour at a local restaurant with a view over the cultivated strip, before crossing back to the East Bank.
Stop 6: Karnak Temple Complex (14:00)
The largest religious building ever constructed. The Great Hypostyle Hall alone holds 134 columns, and the site was extended by pharaohs over roughly two thousand years.
Stop 7: The sacred lake and Hatshepsut's obelisk (15:15)
The lake used for priestly purification and the standing obelisk of Hatshepsut, cut from a single block of Aswan granite and among the tallest still upright anywhere.
Stop 8: Luxor Temple and the Avenue of Sphinxes (16:30)
The riverside temple in the middle of the modern city, best seen as the light drops and the floodlights come on, with part of the restored three-kilometre processional avenue that once linked it to Karnak.
Stop 9: Return transfer (18:00)
Back to your hotel or cruise. If you want the Luxor Museum added instead of one of the temples, tell your guide in the morning and the order changes.
