Overview
Giftun is the reason people snorkel out of Hurghada. The island sits inside a declared national park, which means the reef around it has been protected from anchoring and fishing for decades and the coral is in noticeably better condition than the reefs closer to the resorts. The day is built around two stops. The first is a shallow coral garden where the water is calm and clear enough for first-timers; the second is usually a drop-off where the reef wall falls away and the fish life gets bigger. Between them, lunch is served on deck while the boat repositions. Equipment is provided and a guide swims with the group. The national park entry fee is normally paid separately at the dock.
