Cairo Food Tour

Cairo Food Tour

Four hours eating through downtown Cairo and the old city: koshary, taameya, hawawshi and mint tea, with a guide who knows which stalls to trust.

Book Tour

Overview

Egyptian food is street food. The best koshary in Cairo comes out of a counter that has been serving one dish for sixty years, not from a hotel buffet. This walk takes you to the places locals actually queue for. You will try koshary, the national dish of rice, lentils, pasta and fried onion; taameya, the Egyptian fava bean falafel that is greener and softer than the Levantine version; hawawshi, spiced minced meat baked inside bread; and finish with tea or sugarcane juice. Your guide handles ordering, explains what is in each dish and steers you away from anything that will not sit well with a stomach new to the city. Vegetarian and halal requirements are easy to accommodate; tell us in advance and the route adjusts. FAQ

Are entrance tickets included in the price?

The price covers your private licensed guide, the air-conditioned vehicle and the driver. Site entrance tickets are quoted separately so you only pay for what you choose to enter. Your written proposal lists every ticket and its cost before you pay anything.

Can I be collected from a Nile cruise instead of a hotel?

Yes. Pickup from a moored cruise ship, a hotel, the airport or the train station all work; just tell us where you will be. If your ship is double-moored, your guide meets you on the dock side and walks you across.

I am travelling with children. Do they pay the full price?

Children under 6 travel free of charge on this tour. Ages 6 to 11.99 pay 50 per cent of the tour price, and from 12 years a child pays the full adult rate. Tell us your children's ages when you enquire and the quote reflects them.

Is the price per person or for the whole group?

On this Cairo tour the published rate is $95 for one traveller, $75 each for two, and $65 each from three people upward. All prices on this page are in US dollars per person, and the rate drops as the group grows because the vehicle, guide and driver are shared across more travellers. Holiday departures over Christmas, New Year and Easter are quoted separately as they carry a supplement.
