"Should I start in Luxor or Aswan?" comes up in almost every Nile Valley planning conversation, and the honest answer is that either order works well — the decision comes down to three practical factors, not a right or wrong answer.

Flight availability usually decides it first. More domestic flights from Cairo land in Luxor than in Aswan on most days, simply because Luxor is the larger airport and the more common entry point. If your dates are fixed, checking which city has convenient flight times on your travel days often settles the question before anything else does.

Nile cruise direction is the second factor. As covered in our guide to 5-star Nile cruises, Luxor-to-Aswan sailings are the more commonly sold direction and typically run 4 nights, while Aswan-to-Luxor sailings often run 3 nights. If a specific boat or cabin category matters more to you than city order, check which direction that boat actually sails before deciding your starting city.

How you want the trip to end matters more than people expect. Starting in Luxor and finishing in Aswan means ending the trip in a smaller, quieter Nubian city on the Nile, often with a final night to unwind before flying home or on to Abu Simbel. Starting in Aswan and finishing in Luxor means ending with the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes and, for many, a sunrise hot air balloon over the West Bank as a closing highlight. Neither is objectively better — it depends on whether you would rather wind down or peak at the end.

A third, less obvious point: if Abu Simbel is on your list, it is only reachable from Aswan (by road or by short flight), so building in enough time in Aswan specifically for that side trip matters regardless of which city you start in.

In practice, most private itineraries treat this as a flexible input rather than a fixed rule — the route can be built around whichever order matches your international flight and the specific Nile cruise dates available, rather than forcing the trip into one fixed shape.
