Abu Simbel — the two rock-cut temples built under Ramesses II, relocated in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser — sits roughly 280 km south of Aswan, close to the border with Sudan. It is not a casual add-on; getting there takes a genuine decision between two very different ways of traveling, each with real trade-offs.
By road: cheaper, slower, and a very early start. The road option covers the distance in private or shared road transport, typically departing Aswan well before sunrise to reach the site by mid-morning and return the same day. It is the lower-cost option and lets you see the Nubian desert landscape along the way, but it means a long day — several hours of driving each way on top of the time at the site itself. For travelers not on a tight schedule, or those who enjoy road travel as part of the experience, this is a genuinely good option, not just a budget compromise.
By plane: faster, pricier, and far less tiring. A short domestic flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel's own small airport cuts the travel time dramatically compared to the road, turning what would be a full exhausting day into a half-day round trip. It costs more than the road option, but for travelers with a tight itinerary, limited tolerance for long car journeys, or who are combining Abu Simbel with other Aswan activities on the same day, the time saved is usually worth the difference.
One detail worth knowing regardless of how you go: Abu Simbel is famous for a solar alignment where sunlight reaches deep into the inner sanctuary to illuminate the seated statues, an event that draws larger crowds on those specific dates. Outside those dates, the site is far less crowded, particularly on an early flight or the first road convoy of the day.
Which to choose. If Abu Simbel is the singular reason for your Aswan stop and time is not tight, the road trip is a legitimate, more affordable choice. If Abu Simbel is one stop among several Aswan activities — alongside Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk — the flight usually makes more sense so it does not consume an entire day of a shorter Aswan stay.
